About FreeCell

FreeCell is a one-player patience game with all 52 cards visible from the start. That makes it a game of planning rather than uncovering hidden cards. A suit-building ancestor called Baker's Game appeared in Martin Gardner's Scientific American column in 1968. Paul Alfille changed the tableau rule to alternating colours and made the first computer version in 1978 on the PLATO system at the University of Illinois. This version offers the usual four cells, a harder Two cells mode, and one shared Daily deal.

How to play

The first four tableau columns get seven cards each; the other four get six. Build downward in alternating red and black colours. Any card can start an empty column. Move an Ace to its suit foundation, then build that suit upward through King. Foundation cards stay there. Each free cell holds one card, and a card in a cell may move to a tableau column or foundation. It cannot move to another cell.

Tap or click a card to send it to a useful place. Tap a card partway down a correctly ordered run to move that run. Drag cards or runs to pick a destination. Hold a tableau card on a phone, or right-click it with a mouse, to put its last card in a free cell. A long run needs spare space: you can move one more card than the number of empty free cells, then double that number for each empty tableau column other than the destination. A move of any run counts once. Swipe on empty table space to scroll.

On a keyboard, use arrow keys to focus a pile, Enter to act on it, F to send its top tableau card to a cell, U to undo, H for a hint, A for auto-finish when offered, and N for a new game. Undo is unlimited. The game ends when every card reaches a foundation, or when no legal action remains.

Tips

Empty a tableau column before filling the free cells: an empty column multiplies how many cards you can move at once. Keep free cells open for as long as you can, since each occupied one shrinks your choices. Plan how to reach low cards first; they unlock the foundation piles. Do not rush every card to the foundations. A card still in the tableau may be needed to organise a longer run. Use a hint or undo to explore a difficult position.

FAQ

Is FreeCell free?

Yes. Every mode is free in your browser, with no account or download.

Can every deal be won?

Almost all deals can be won; estimates put solvable deals at around 99.999%. The Daily deal is checked by a solver.

Why can't I move a long run?

Moving a run needs enough free cells and empty columns. The maximum is one more than the number of free cells, doubled for each empty column, excluding the destination.

What is the Daily deal?

It is one shared, solver-checked deal for each UTC date.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. Tap or drag cards; hold a tableau card to send it to a free cell.
